DIY Embroidered Bracelet

When I was in college, I took a fiber arts class. We learned knitting, crocheting, embroidery, quilting, and we touched on weaving in the final weeks. I really enjoyed the class. It was very relaxed, and I cherish many of the projects I made. I haven’t had much time to use those skills since taking the class, but making an embroidered bracelet was a project I could easily tackle in an afternoon…and I’m quite pleased with the result! It’s a very inexpensive project, and it’s so easy to personalize with different colors and patterns. Keep reading to learn how to make your own!

SUPPLIES:

1 inch cotton webbing – My bracelet is 6 3/4 inches, but I got a foot of webbing for only 60¢. You should be able to find this in the sewing department of your craft store.

25mm/1 inch ribbon clamps. I couldn’t find these at my craft store, so I got them from this shop on Etsy.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Sketch out the pattern you want to embroider…unless you just want to wing it. This is mine, but as you’ll notice, I didn’t follow it exactly. DIY-embroidered-bracelet3

2. Cut your webbing to a length that fits around your wrist. It shouldn’t wrap all the way around your arm since you’re adding a clasp. The ends of mine were about an inch shy of touching when wrapped around my wrist. Put the ribbon clamps on either end of the webbing – you just clamp them on with jewelry pliers. 3. Embroider your pattern on the webbing. Don’t worry about it being perfect. Mine’s certainly not, but I still like it. If you need instructions on how to embroider, just check out this instructables article. I just used a basic backstitch and satin stitch, but if you want to get all fancy with french knots and such, go for it! I have some extra webbing, so I may make make another using some different techniques.I went with a southwest-inspired pattern, but something floral or Scandinavian-inspired would be pretty. 4. Add a chain extender to one end of your bracelet and a lobster clasp to the other. That’s it, you’re done! I’d love to see pictures if anyone does this project, so please share! DIY-embroidered-bracelet5 DIY-embroidered-bracelet6

Inspiration: Neon

I was shopping at Uptown Cheapskate on Sunday and I noticed that I was drawn to pieces with bright/neon colors. Nothing crazy like this - neons can certainly be done WRONG. A single neon item, or a couple of the same color, paired with simple pieces in neutral colors creates an eye-catching (in a good way) combination. It’s a very sophisticated way to incorporate bright colors into an outfit…as opposed to this :)

I love the orange/coral pants in pic 9. I think that’s my favorite of the neon colors. Purple will always be one of my favorite colors, too, though (pic 11). Also note the neon shoelaces in pic 4 – love that!

New Blog Design!

So I finally took the leap – I purchased my domain, bought hosting, and redesigned my blog.

Welcome to the new and improved 2ndhand Knowledge! I’m super excited for the change, and I hope all my followers enjoy it as much as I do.

I still have a bit of work to do before the transformation is complete. There are a few design kinks I need to work out and some content I still need to transfer. I’ll leave my old site, www.2ndhandknowledge.wordpress.com, up until this new one is completely ready and all my followers have had ample time to make the change in their RSS reader of choice.

Curls, Pleats, & Changing Seasons

I got a perm this morning. Why did I, someone with natural curls, get a perm? I have very inconsistent, fussy curls, so I only had some of my hair loosely permed to even out the texture some. In these pictures, it’s in its poofy, post treatment, wind-blown, frizzy state. I’m really excited to wash it two days from now and see the curls with a little more definition and less frizz…and push those bangs off my face. I just hope the curls still look alright when my hair gets longer – my stylist said it should grow out nicely, and maybe even look better when a bit longer. My goal is to get my hair pretty long again, so hopefully she’s right.

I really like this color combination. I was inspired by this outfit, from the blog M Loves M (though I went with an eggplant color rather than maroon). I’ve been browsing my style Pinterest board a lot lately – the transitional period between seasons always puts me in a bit of a rut because I’m still refreshing my memory of the warmer weather clothes I’ve had packed up, and I’m pretty sick of my winter clothes. Today was nearly 90˚F, though, so I think it’s about time to say goodbye to the more wintery items. Haha, the jump from cold weather to warm was so quick, I still walk outside expecting to need a coat.

What’s Up? (Belated) March Edition

Since I didn’t post Monday, you get a double dose of me today! Plus, I realized I never shared my March Instagram highlights and what I’ve been up to.

  2. My sister and I went to the park during her spring break. We had to wait a looong time before the swings were free. All the kiddies in town were at the park that unusually warm day.
  3. I got accepted to the University or Oregon Interior Architecture graduate program! It’s not likely to happen though, because I’m not having much luck getting an assistantship.
  4. I go to yard sales with my mom every Saturday morning. We’re normally up before the sun. It’s totally worth it, though, because I’ve found some pretty awesome stuff.
  5. My St. Patrick’s day outfit! I went with a subtle green.
  6. I love miso soup! I’ve eaten a lot of it lately.
  7. Some goodies – Blog Inc., white out, and my favorite pens.
  8. I have a lot of hats. I need to wear them more often!
  9. No, I didn’t murdur a purple-blooded creature. I was cutting up beets to roast for dinner. Yum!

This week’s shopping guide interview is with Tanya, owner of TAGS in Oakdale, California! TAGS has everything from basic wardrobe staples to totally eclectic pieces. They also carry home goods….it sounds like they have pretty much anything you could fathom – fun! In addition to the below interview, Tanya also shared some videos from the store’s earlier days. Since I can’t come up with a fun fact… How about a secret… I have always wanted to give acting a try! Or guilty pleasure: Can’t stop reading on my smart phone.

2. Why did you decide to start a consignment store?

VALUE!! Consignment works harder for the community, stretches your money, is green living at its best!! I was working long hours for other companies…and thought it was time to work for me. It will be 7 years October 2013.

3. What’s the best part about your job?

Putting the value back into underloved items!! The treasure hunt everyday! The community apsect of the job. There is a shared responsibility between the consignors and TAGS. It creates a comraderie that doesn’t always exsist in other businesses. Since unsold items go directly to local charities, there is an added layer of what our business and consignors bring to the community.

4. What types and/or brands of things could a shopper find in your store?

TAGS is a brilliant to basics store!! That means we have an eclectic blend of merchandise…from coveted premier brands, to the best of the basics…we usually have it! If not, simply put it on the wish list that we have…and YES…we will call you.

Not only do we carry the brands that people love to find! We also have been known for some other things… spurs, stuffed pheasant, bar stools, rugs, chandliers, garden supplies, and more. Often times we tell consignors, if you don’t know just bring it in…WE LOVE to LOOK!

5. To give readers a better idea of what great things they can find, what is one (or some) of your favorite pieces in your store right now?

A set of yellow polka dot lawn chairs (vintage), Lucky NWT satchel, A carpet bag, True Religion Jeans, mens Chanel cologne, FAB!! pole dancing exercise dvd LOL!! Vintage fabric wallet…great!!

6. What is one thing that sets your store apart from the rest/makes it unique?

MENS – Yes We have a great mens selection – shoes, suspenders, premium denim, favorite T’s and more!

7. What’s the best part about being in the location (city/state) your store is in?

Oakdale, CA is a great community to serve! They have embraced green living and have embraced TAGS with open arms. Oakdale is also a gateway community to the beautiful sierra nevada foothills and Yosemite.

Olive, Pink, and Dog Models

Trains are a nice way to travel. I can just relax, read, take pictures of the sun rising…but they’re also a great way to get sick. Yup, I caught something. Luckily it didn’t kick in until my last day in Northern Virginia, so I was still able to enjoy my trip. I got to hang out with the cute doggies in these pictures, see my even cuter one-year-old cousin, have lunch with a good friend that I haven’t seen since last fall, have a nice lunch with my grandparents, see my grandma’s art show, sit in Cherry Blossom Festival traffic for an hour (the trees weren’t really in bloom yet, bummer), check out the Torpedo Factory Art Center, catch up on some reading, and watch way too much TV. Sigh…now I have to get back to work.

I wanted to bring as little luggage as possible on my trip, so I packed items that could all be mixed and matched. Pink and olive, a combination I love, was pretty much the theme of my weekend. Weekend Links!

Happy early weekend! I’m off on an adventure via train. I’m dog-sitting for relatives this weekend, and I’m not bringing a computer with me (it’s kinda hard to travel with a 27″ iMac). I’ll try to post when I get home on Monday night, but if not, I’ll be back Tuesday. I think I’m going to just take advantage of my time without my computer to catch up on some long overdue reading. I was planning on getting out and exploring some while away, but I think I’d rather just relax, read, and hang out with the dogs. One of the big trends this spring is globally influenced apparel and accessories. Think mud cloth, Scandinavian embroidery, raffia, ikat, etc. I love it!

I shopped resale & consignment for myself when I was pregnant and for my children. I loved the idea and felt it would be a good match for our family, and something I would be good at.

I get to play with toys, hold babies, help women look their best on a budget, help teens find their fairytale-perfect Prom dress…what’s not to love?!

For kids we carry everything from the bargain brands (at an even better bargain than new!), trendy brands like Baby Gap & Gymboree, up to designer brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Lilly Pulitzer. We also carry many new products that cannot be found anywhere else; BabyLegs, RazBaby products, Moby Wraps, Happy Heinys cloth diapers, Preggie Pops & Drops, Teethifiers, and many locally handmade products.

We have some absolutely gorgeous sundresses in right now from JCrew, and I love that we have a great selection of hoodies year round from American Eagle, Abercrombie and Hollister. For kids, my faves at the moment are a rolling wood cart by Haba, a kid-size library cart from The Community, and lots of oh-so-cute summer outfits for both boys and girls.

6. What is one thing that sets your store apart from the rest/makes it unique?

We are involved in many community events like Holiday Heroes (raises money for local food bank) and round-ups for other local charities (round your purchase up to the next dollar, difference goes to charity). The most common feedback we hear from our customers and consignors is that we are friendly, clean, organized, and only accept high quality items.

7. What’s the best part about being in the location (city/state) your store is in?

Being from San Diego, I absolutely LOVE living in a small town. It gives me the opportunity to really get to know people and interact with them on many levels, not just in my capacity as a store owner. My customers are also friends who I see at church, local charity events, at the grocery store and out to dinner!

8. Quick! You have one minute to convince someone why they should start shopping secondhand…go!

Why spend more? We have everything you’d find in your favorite brand stores at a fraction of the cost! For the price of a single pair of jeans at a mall store, you can buy a whole outfit at Born Again with items you can mix and match for even more fun.
